Welcome to our Maths page at Warfield CE Primary School. The aim for our children is to become confident, fluent problem solvers who can talk through their ideas and understanding. 

At Warfield Church of England Primary School, we implement a 'Mastery Approach' when teaching mathematics. This entails children fully understanding and grappling with mathematical concepts and applying them to a range of real-life contexts. We believe that all children are capable of reasoning and solving problems. A driving factor towards achieving mastery is to ensure all of our children are fluent in drawing on their number knowledge. If a child is fluent, they are able to recall known number facts in a timely manner and use these to calculate. Our teachers use the White Rose Hub materials as the basis for their planning.  To ensure that children can fully visualise number, there is a heavy emphasis on the use of concrete apparatus, regardless of a child's ability. Children throughout the school are encouraged to demonstrate their understanding through the use of manipulatives and pictorial representations, talking through their ideas and making justifications. 

To support our children in the learning, and instant recall of, their times tables, we run a half-termly Times Tables Challenge. This takes place in years 2-6 whereby children complete a mixed times tables grid. The aim is to increase their score - or their time - each time. Children will be celebrated for both achievement and improvement. Teachers at Warfield will tailor the teaching of times tables to the needs of their class. This will include counting, finding patterns, using the inverse of multiplication tables and games to increase rapid recall of number facts. 

To enable our children to apply their maths knowledge in a range of contexts - both in and out of school - we make cross-curricular links with other subjects. This might include measuring in science, calculating perimeter and distances in geography, using ratios when mixing colours or chronology of dates in history. 

This academic year, each phase have held curriculum evening events where teachers have demonstrated the methods taught within each year group and how parents can support their child's maths learning at home. On your child's class page, you will find information on how to best support your child's maths learning at home. 

Working on maths with your child at home does not need to be time consuming or involve written work. Playing times table and number games involving objects, cards, dice etc are often the best ways to engage and interact with your child to enhance their learning. Some of the best maths thinking is not done using pencil and paper! Allow children time to talk about their learning and explain their thinking and methods to you.
